چکیده

We discuss an unusual reflexive construction in which the Chinese reflexive ziji appears twice, once before the verb and once after. We demonstrate that this is a distinct construct with its own rules of construal and interpretation; it is not, for example, a combination of a simple ziji reflexive and an adverbial intensifier. Notably, their locality properties are also different: Double ziji does not tolerate non-local readings. We argue that while ziji is (or can be) a logophor [1], double ziji is an ordinary Principle A anaphor with all the properties and restrictions

‎Finite iterative methods for solving systems of linear matrix equations over reflexive and anti-reflexive matrices

A matrix $Pintextmd{C}^{ntimes n}$ is called a generalized reflection matrix if $P^{H}=P$ and $P^{2}=I$‎. ‎An $ntimes n$‎ ‎complex matrix $A$ is said to be a reflexive (anti-reflexive) matrix with respect to the generalized reflection matrix $P$ if $A=PAP$ ($A=-PAP$)‎. ‎In this paper‎, ‎we introduce two iterative methods for solving the pair of matrix equations $AXB=C$ and $DXE=F$ over reflexiv...

The use of the reflexive marker in Lusaamia

The present study examines the uses of the reflexive marker in Lusaamia, a Bantu language of Kenya. In addition to being a true reflexive, the reflexive verbal prefix is also used in indirect reflexive constructions, as a middle voice / stative marker, and also to indicate when an action is being done for no particular purpose (when used in conjunction with a causative marker). I show that unac...

When “He” Can Also Be “She”: An ERP Study of Reflexive Pronoun Resolution in Written Mandarin Chinese

The gender information in written Chinese third person pronouns is not symmetrically encoded: the character for "he" (, with semantic radical , meaning human) is used as a default referring to every individual, while the character for "she" (, with semantic radical , meaning woman) indicates females only. This critical feature could result in different patterns of processing of gender informati...

Global attractors for doubly nonlinear evolution equations with non-monotone perturbations

This paper proposes an abstract theory concerned with dynamical systems generated by doubly nonlinear evolution equations governed by subdifferential operators with non-monotone perturbations in a reflexive Banach space setting. In order to construct global attractors, an approach based on the notion of generalized semiflow is employed instead of the usual semi-group approach, since solutions o...

Thought De se, first person indexicals and Chinese reflexive ziji

In this paper, we make a distinction between the de se and non-de se interpretations of first person indexicals and Chinese reflexive ziji. Based on the distinction, we discuss the relationship between these expressions in Chinese, and point out the problems with Wechsler's (2010) de se theory of person indexicals as well as the inappropriateness of characterizing Chinese long-distance ziji as a
